Child labourer rescued from hotel in Margherita

MARGHERITA, July 5: With the help of Legal Awareness Network Centre, Margherita, a child labourer was rescued by Margherita Subdivision Labour Officer Dr B Mili and Margherita Sub Division Extra Commissioner Dmithun Borgiary from Apakhya Hotel in Margherita which is owned by Biku Sarma.

The child labourer is a resident of mdang TE Margherita. He said that he had been working in Apakhya Hotel since the last three years and he was made to work for 12-14 hours every day.

Dr B Mili said, “We will determine the age of the rescued child and if it is proved that he is below 14 years of age then as per Child Labour Protection Act, the guilty will be punished with three months imprisonment or Rs 20,000 fine.”

Papu Sah, president of Legal Awareness Network Centre, Margherita said, “We have been doing awareness programmes regarding child labour for many days and have been keeping a strict eye on hotels, garage and other places where children below 14 years work as labourers. Three days ago I saw a child working in Apakhya Hotel working till 9 pm. Hence today I informed the Margherita Sub Divisiol Extra Commissioner and Margherita Sub Divisiol Labour Officer and they rescued that child from hotel.”
