Citizenship (Amendment) Bill :Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) likely to table report in Winter session

Guwahati: The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) which has been examining the much-debated Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, will probably table its report amid the winter session of Parliament.

The Bill, which aims at amending the Citizenship Act, 1955, has experienced strong resistance from Northeastern states. The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), a constituent of the BJP-led administering alliance in Assam, has pitched itself unequivocally against the Bill. Another BJP partner, the Janata Dal (United), has stretched out its help to the AGP on the issue. The AGP has said that the Bill is against the interests of "indigenous individuals".

The administrations of Meghalaya and Mizoram had additionally expressed their opposition to the enactment.

The 30-member JPC, headed by BJP Lok Sabha part Rajendra Agrawal, incorporates Bhartruhari Mahtab of the Biju Janata Dal, Saugata Roy of the Trinamool Congress, Meenakshi Lekhi of the BJP, Satish Mishra of the Bahujan Samaj Party and Mohammad Salim of the CPI(M).
