City celebrates Abhiruchi Sports Day

GUWAHATI, Sept 3: 33rd Abhiruchi Sports Day celebrated throughout the state on Saturday. The central function was held in Guwahati and it was attended by star Indian sprinter Dutee Chand.

3rd September is the birthday of Assam’s first Arju award winner athlete Bhogeswar Baruah and the day is celebrated as Sports day by Abhiruchi Group. The day’s programme started with mass jogging from Chandmari fly over which was jointly flagged off by Dutee Chand and Bhogeswar Baruah respectively. Around 2000 school childrens and players took part in it. The event was followed by dance and PT competition in the morning and felicitation function in the evening. Last two events were held at the Rabindra Bhavan. Assam Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal attended the felicitation function as a chief guest.

Talking to the media person at the side line of the mass jogging event Dutee Chand said, “I am surprised to see that you are honouring a legend in such a nice manner. Great job.”

Baruah in his brief speech said, “Sports has given me a lot of things in my life and I am highly satisfied with it. But still there is one regret and it is that my state has failed to produce one Olympian in athletics.” He felt present system is responsible for it. The mass jogging flag off function was also attended by former intertiol athlete Tayabun Nessa.
