City dwellers raise concern over GMC’s incapability

GUWAHATI, May 15: Residents of various wards from across the city have been mired with series of shortfalls and urgency since long. Almost approaching the monsoon in front, the residents from Maligaon, Zoo Road, Nilachal Hill and Kamakhya areas are impatiently waiting for an attention from the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) at the earliest to avert possible untoward incidents.

Asking an immediate gear up from the GMC, Pankaj Das, a resident from Zoo Road expressed displeasure over the shortfall of GMC’s garbage collection vehicles which is resulting in irregular clearance of garbage from the locality. As a result, Das anticipated that the first shower of the season will devastate the surrounding of the locality. Moreover, number of residents disputed the irregular supply of water by the GMC and revealed that the GMC is also failing in maintaining the routine supply of water to the residents for which they are affected in doing their core works.

The residents from ward No. 4 of Maligaon area while blaming the GMC for not progressing in constructing the drainage system in the locality informed to The Sentinel that the Ward has been recognized as one of the Dengue prone are by the National Health Mission (NHM). Eventually, the residents are worried for the reason that the uncovered drainages may aggravate the syndrome in the ensuing monsoon. The residents also expressed anger over the GMC’s lackadaisical attitude for not spewing paste control in the locality.
The series of grievances faced by the residents of Nilachal Hill is not much different from other localities of the city. However, they are more concern with the fact that the area is home to number of religious institutions that greets thousands of domestic as well as foreign visitors a day. Hence, they appealed the GMC for regular supply of clean drinking water, efficient regulation of the parking slots and regular disposal of garbage on daily basis.
