City Journalist Stabbed At A Restaurant Alber Eats In Ganeshguri

GUWAHATI: Crimes against journalist has seen an increasing trend over the years and one such incident in the city has created an uproar among the community. A brawl had broken out at a restaurant Alber Eats in Ganeshguri, Protech Centre building on Thursday among the employees and a security Bhabesh Das, 27, of the building. The incident was recorded and later played at the News 18 channel, situated in the same building.

Journalist Chakrapani Parasar, who worked with the channel went for a cup of tea to the restaurant and fell into an argument with the owner Sayed Ali Ahmed. The infuriated Ahmed, without thinking twice, stabbed Parasar in the gut, while his employees set fire around their own establishment. Parasar was rushed to a hospital in is being treated for his injuries.

Later, security in-charge Deepak Deka, on behalf of Bhabesh Das lodged an FIR (909/19) against Alber Eats at Dispur police station, while News 18 also lodged an FIR (906/19 u/s 326/ 307/ 506/ 34 IPC) at the same station. Dispur police has arrested owner Sayed Ali Ahmed, 36, along with employees Bhabesh Das, 27, Nitin Ali, 27, and Niroj Ahmed.

National Union of Journalists India, (NUJI) and Journalists Association of Assam (JAA) vehemently condemned the brutal attack on the city based journalist and demanded exemplary punishment of the culprits involved in the crime. In a press release, National vice president NUJI Bhupen Goswami, President JAA Dhirendra Nath Chakravarty, and General Secretary JAA Dalim Phukan, expressed serious concern over the rise of crime against journalist in the state and demanded the government to introduce the Journalist Protection Act in the state. The journalist organization demanded the government to bear the medical treatment cost of Chakrapani Parashar who is battling for his life in the hospital. The journalists Association of Assam JAA, has also presented a memorandum to Prime Minister of India with Chief Minister of Assam demanding a comprehensive Journalist Protection Act for journalists’ protection.
