SHILLONG: Ineligibility on the part of the Atomic Mineral Divisions (AMD) and the Meghalaya Government to fructify the State cancer centre within the premises of the Shillong civil hospital has attracted a medical consortium to express its interest in hastening up the commissioning of the cancer treatment centre.

The State cancer centre is an offshoot of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) entered into by the State Cancer Society with the AMD seven years ago. But it failed to take off at the listed time period, reasons that are being attributed to the slow progress of the civil works. The other that has compounded the problem is the inability to install the medical equipments and machineries even if the civil works of the cancer wing has been completed nearly a year ago.

Secretary of the Department of Family and Health Welfare, Pravin Bakshi during an interaction with The Sentinel on Monday admitted the delay in commissioning the cancer wing at the Shillong civil hospital. He cited the reasons for the escalation of price of the machineries whose indent is not in line with the technological up gradation process. Notwithstanding the delay, Bakshi informed that a medical consortium has with branches in Bangalore, Tripura and Nagaland has already submitted the petition of its expression of interest to be part of the cancer wing on the Public Private partnership (PPP) mode. According to Bakshi, another MOU is expected with the consortium to make the long-pending project materialize.

Going from what the health official stated, the consortium desired that the project will go in consonance with the National Health Public Mission (NHPM) that will be integrated with the Meghalaya Health Insurance Scheme (MHIS). It has been dealt in principle, indicated Bakshi, adding, “Everything related to this endeavor is in a final stage and it is expected to be completed by this calendar year. The Secretary of health and family welfare said that the project will go be in tandem with the State government. “The State medical doctors and the other cancer experts will collaborate and use highly technical equipments together in the process of diagnostic and treatment of the cancer patients,” further disclosed Bakshi.
