PROTEST AGAINST BILL

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: Violent clashes amongst the Assamese on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 in the State are viewed as disastrous for the State and its people. If the recent attack on AASU (All Assam Students’ Union) members in Nalbari and the attack on BJP leaders in Tinsukia are not signs of such an omen, what else is? Dispur is worried of the situation, so is the State police force.

Differences are vividly seen among the Assamese on Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019. It is more than official now with the issue discussed on the floor of the State Assembly. It has been discussed in the House that a section is out to drive a wedge amongst the Assamese, Bengalis and the Muslims in the State.

Gauging the disastrous direction which the situation is heading for Dispur has already asked its police force not to be in confrontation with the protesters, especially with the AASU, so as not to let the situation go beyond control.

However, in the name of protest against the Citizenship Bill, a section is resorting to vulgarity like nude or semi-nude protests in public places. Such behaviour was quite alien to the Assamese society and as such the development taking place now can never benefit the people of this land. A conscious section wants to get across the message that there are hundreds of ways to register one’s protest, instead of opting to vulgarity. The same section does not also approve vandalizing public vehicles and harassing passengers in the name of protest as such overdrives can never solve any problems.

Talking to The Sentinel, a top-level police official said: “It’s a matter of serious concern. We’re keeping a close watch on the situation so as not to allow it to escalate further. We’re quite vigilant not to allow a third force to take the advantage of the current situation in the State. We’re acting with utmost care to avoid confrontation with the protesters.”
