Shillong, March 12: Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma on Monday won the trust vote.
Conrad, the tiol president of the tiol People’s Party (NPP) is yet to be elected as a member of the House. He is currently the Lok Sabha MP from Tura.
Conrad proved his majority on the floor of the House during the special session of the Assembly.
However, the vote of confidence saw exchange of barbs between the treasury and the opposition benches.
Participating in the motion of confidence which was moved by Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Prestone Tynsong, Former CM Mukul Sangma said that it was appropriate for the House to know which party is leading the Government.
In an obvious reference to the role of the BJP in stitching the coalition, the opposition leader said, “We would like to know whether it is NPP-led Government, BJP-led Government or a conglomeration of party which is leading the Government,” the CLP leader said.
He also pointed out that the results of the Meghalaya Assembly polls was a fractured mandate.
He further said that a look at the background of the whole campaign reveals that the mandate of the people is to form a Government without the BJP.
The BJP won only two seats in the recently concluded Meghalaya Assembly polls.
The former Chief Minister, observed that the basic guiding principle of the Constitution is to respect the mandate given by the people.
He also said that during their election campaigns, all the political parties assured the people of the State that they will not have any connection with the BJP.
“The political parties in their campaigns have promise the innocent people of the State that they have no access to BJP,” Mukul Sangma added.
In his reply, the Chief Minister stated that it is very clear that the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) coalition Government is headed by the NPP.
“I don’t think there is any kind of doubt on this. Even in the letter of supports of the MLAs which was submitted to the Governor all had mentioned that they were expressing their support to the NPP-led Government under the leadership of Conrad K Sangma,” Chief Minister said.
