CM lays foundation stone of mega  multi-purpose sports complex at Dibrugarh

Dibrugarh, July 5: Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal laid the foundation stone of a Rs 139.82 crore multi-purpose sports complex at Khanikar Park in Dibrugarh town today. The proposed sports complex is to be constructed with financial aid from Government of India under NLCPR.

Addressing the gathering at the function organized by the Sports and Youth Welfare Department of the Government of Assam, Chief Minister Sonowal urged the people to adopt sports as a way of life. He said that sports help to keep mind and body fit and healthy and therefore it is imperative to play sports in everyday life. “Increasing the number of hospitals is not the solution to our health issues. It is sports which can give us enduring health,” he observed.

Urging the people to promote sports amongst youth, Sonowal said that sports is a very fertile ground for building character and strong personality. The society must put efforts to kindle interest amongst youth towards sports, he said. He moreover observed that many parents show hesitation in allowing their children to take up sports as a serious discipline. Stating that such an attitude affects creativity and positive temperament, he called upon the people to encourage their children to take up sports.

The Chief Minister also appreciated the local clubs for their endeavour to hold sports tournaments with their limited resources and said that such initiatives are instrumental in promoting talented sportspersons at village level. He advised the organizers to step forward with well-prepared annual calendar of sports events.

He also informed that BCCI has already decided to set up a National Cricket Academy in Dibrugarh.

Coinciding the function, Chief Minister Sonowal also felicitated thirteen former sportspersons and sports organizers for their contribution in the field of sports in the state. The distinguished sportspersons felicitated on the occasion are Dhirendra Nath Baruah, Prabnabjyoti Baruah, Troilukya Nath Duara, Thaneswar Saikia, Girish Phukan, Pranab Baruah, Swadhin Deka Raja, Toshen Bora, Arun Borthakur, Faizul Haque, Pradyut Roy Choudhury, Monu Bijon Kharghoria and Dambaru Khanikar.

MP Rameswar Teli, MLAs Prashanta Phukan, Rituparna Baruah, Commissioner & Secretary Sports & Youth Welfare Ashutosh Agnihotri and Deputy Commissioner Loya Madduri also spoke on the occasion. This is stated in a release.
