CM Sarbananda Sonowal Appreciates Cleft Care Centre For Extensive Work

GUWAHATI: The Chief Minister of Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal visited the Guwahati Comprehensive Cleft Care Centre (GC4), at the premises of Mahendra Mohan Chowdhury Hospital on Wednesday and expressed his happiness for the work being performed by the centre since the past 10 years. He stated, ‘the Guwahati Comprehensive Cleft Centre, that has performed more than 19000 surgeries in last 10 years, is a huge milestone in cleft care and must be recognized globally’.

The Chief Minister took the stock of the facilities being available at the centre and opined that the centre can take lead in the cleft care services in the ASEAN countries. He further promised that he will mention GC4 in his dialogue with other countries and will help promote the centre.

It is estimated that 1 in 700 children in India is born with a cleft deformity. Though completely treatable, a huge backlog of untreated cleft patients exists, due to lack of resources as well as awareness. With GC4 at the Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital, a state-of-the-art Centre, which provides 24 X 7 world class treatments to children born with cleft deformities, with support from the Government of Assam. The Centre went live on May 9, 2011, and has been created to provide services to all the cleft patients of the region.
