'Cognitive qualities, critical thinking makes an engineer successful'

Silchar, June 24: Cognitive qualities, critical and logical thinking makes an engineer successful. This was pointed out by R Subrahmanyam, IAS, Secretary, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, at the XVIth convocation of the National Institute of Technology, Silchar, (NITS) which was held in the auditorium at Sports Complex of NITS on Saturday. In convocation address as the chief guest, R Subrahmanyam said that life is a challenge which demands formality and seriousness. "I do not wish to lengthen my speech and bore you with advises. NITS is capable for producing the best. Cognitive qualities, innovative mindset and critical thinking, logical reasoning and analytical skills are the ingredients for a good and successful engineer."

R Subrahmanyam further said that educational institutions need to focus on improving these qualities. He assured that NITs will soon introduce special course and take special measures for honing soft skills to the students.

Special guest Dr Soumyabrata Chakrabarty, head, Microwave Sensors Antenna Division, ISRO, Ahmedabad, said that the mentality to work in unison should be there. Prof Sivaji Bandyopadhyay, director/chairperson, BOG, NITS, declared the convocation 'open'. He said, "It gives me immense pleasure to inform that NITS secured 57th rank in NIFR raking and achieved 12th rank among 31 NITs in India, 2nd rank amongst top engineering institutions in northeast India. Gyan Patnaik, senior director, IT Behemoth Infosys Limited, an alumnus of NIT Silchar, also graced the occasion as the guest of honour.

566 B. Tech students, 167 M. Tech students, 29 M. Sc students, 44 MBA students and 40 Ph. D students were awarded degrees at the convocation. Gold and silver medals were also bestowed upon rank holders, the Best Engineering Graduate and the Best Gymkhana member. Manish Jain, the Best Engineering Graduate of NITS, Department of Mechanical Engineering, was presented Kalikrishna-Mrinalini Krori Gold Medal. Dev Manas, Department of Mechanical Engineering, was presented Saswata Purkayastha Memorial Medal for the Best Gymkhana member.
