Come out clean on Bill: AASU

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, June 25: The All Assam Students Union (AASU) has expressed surprise as to why the State Government is silent on the contentious issue of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 especially when the neigbouring States are opposing it. The organisation demanded that the State Government must come out openly on its stand over the issue, adding that the Bill must be withdrawn immediately.

Pointing out that "the Meghalaya and Nagaland Governments have already taken Cabinet decisions against the Central Government's move", AASU president Dipanka Kumar Nath and general secretary Lurin Jyoti Gogoi said: "Even the Mizoram Government is opposing the Bill, of late."

The student leaders further alleged that "the State Government has failed to work in the interest of the indigenous people", adding that "both the Central and the State Governments are planning to settle Bangladeshis in Assam."

Stating that the Foreigners (Amendment) Order 2015 and the Passport (Amendment) Rule 2015 "would only safeguard the illegal Bangladeshis", the students organization demanded that "both must be scrapped."

The leaders also stated that the political parties are interested in strengthening their respective vote banks.

Meanwhile, the AASU along with 28 other indigenous organisations would be staging a 'gana satyagraha' in the city on June 29.
