Comeback Stories In Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Election

Shillong: After embarrassing defeats in the 2017 State elections, four prominent ex-legislators got themselves elected to the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC). They are Paul Lyngdoh (UDP), Ronnie V Lyngdoh (Congress), Pynshngain N Syiem (NPP) and Martle Mukhim (HSPDP). Paul Lyngdoh is a known man in State politics and has been elected to the council for the first time. Ronnie V Lyngdoh, Pynshngain N Syiem and Martle Mukhim are all Young Turks in the KHADC.

The Sentinel solicited the views of these prominent faces especially when there was complete chaos in the last five years in the KHADC. There were four Chief Executive Members (CEM) in the past five year period of coalition politics..

Elected Congress member Ronnie V Lyngdoh said the wanton defection is because the elected representative doesn’t respect the faith bestowed on them. “Shifting stance for the sake of power undermine the wisdom of the electorates”, stated Ronnie who is among the 10 elected MDCs.

UDP leader Paul Lyngdoh stated, “My objective is to improve the council laws. It should not be through confrontation but co-operation” He further said he doesn’t want that the laws passed by the council end up as white paper in front of the government.

Martle Mukhim, a man who bounced back as an elected candidate on a HSPDP ticket, said my clear objectives is to bring development and uplift the image of our community in all spheres. Mukhim said the functioning of the council has been defective in all spheres and it needs to be streamlined.

Latiplang Kharkongor (independent) elected for the fourth time said the old rust in the KHADC has to polished. Pynshngain N Syiem (NPP), who created a shock by winning the Mawkhar–Pynthorumkhrah seat, attributed his victory to his consistency to take on anything that is against the infringement of the government on the powers of KHADC. He himself was the KHADC Chief Executive Member (CEM) for two years till the usual rumblings in the KHADC led to his ouster.
