Lakhimpur, July 27: Never before in Lakhimpur the locals have witnessed such development - the commercial complex, built by the Municipal Works Department of North Lakhimpur and Town and Country Planning department of North Lakhimpur.

The commercial complex of Lakhimpur is designed as replica of Guwahati based shopping complex and malls to hold more than 70 shops, making it convenient for the people of the district in shopping. Parking lot is build for the reduction of traffic jam as the commercial complex is in the heart of the North Lakhimpur district.

An amount of Rs 354.74 lakh was sanctioned by the Government of India for building this commercial complex. Around 90 per cent of the amount is being finced by the Central Government and 10 per cent is finced by the State Government. The construction work has been going on since five years.

“The construction of the commercial complex in North Lakhimpur district is a major development as there no commercial complex has been built before. The commercial complex is going to be highly beneficial for the people of the district. Most importantly, it will definitely reduce the problem of traffic jam and prevent the theft of vehicles as security guards will guard the parking lot round-the-clock. The construction is almost done, only the electrification works and a generator is left to be set up for back up. The commercial complex will soon be iugurated as we are already running late as per the scheduled plan. Before  August 15 this year the commercial complex will be functiol and shopkeepers have already signed up to set up their shops in the complex. The retail vegetable sellers who have been doing business from a very long period of time will get shelter in the commercial complex,” the Deputy Director of Town and Country Planning told The Sentinel.

“Initially many vegetable vendors used to do business in the Assam-type shelter and the place was unhygienic for the people. Many unions requested us to build a commercial complex so that all the vendors along with the people get benefited. But due to lack of capital it was not possible to build a commercial complex but later in the year 2008 the fund was sanctioned by the government for the development of north-eastern States, including Sikkim, sanction of projects relating to Assam and construction of commercial complex at North Lakhimpur. The sanction was regulated in accordance with the provisions of GFR, 2005,” Parag Dutta project in-charge said.

“We are happy that the government has taken such initiatives to support us and make the environment hygienic. Overall it is a big step towards the development of Lakhimpur and city beautification. In the monsoons, it gets very difficult to do our business but now since the commercial complex is being constructed, we will get shelter,” a local vendor said.
