Concern over social evil

SHILLONG, July 27: A concerned resident of Madanrting has appealed to like minded people to support his cause in uprooting the various social evils that exists in Madanrting Block-E, despite revealing that he has been receiving numerous threats from countless unknown persons.

Addressing newsmen here on Wednesday, concerned resident of the locality Desmon John Kharkongor said, “I have been constantly working with the police department to eradicate the drug and alcohol problem in the locality since 2012 however since block-E of the locality are not taking any ictivity to curb the growing mece it has made things difficult.”

Stating that the main source of drugs is from Happy Valley, he said, “I have approached local heads of Block-E countless times both the secretary and senior representative but they have kept on telling me that since I’m not a resident of the block I have no right to interfere in their business.”

He said the police have arrested a number of drug dealers from the locality however soon after their release they would go back to their old habit of selling drugs. “There should have been guidelines from the locality to keep a stern check on such activities however these people are fee to do whatever they like,” he said adding that even land lords give their house for rent without proper details of their tents.

He informed that in the year December 2015 he had been constantly targeted by people because for the sole reason that he has been working for the welfare of the community.

“I have also been constantly threatened by these drugs peddlers,” he said adding that in the locality even after wine stores have been shutdown in most areas in the city however in the locality people easily avail alcohol freely.

According to his claim, there are around 25 illegal alcohol counters in the locality and most of the sellers are non-Khasis and the concern authority keeps on turning a blind eye to such activities.

He said at one point of time he had to seek help from the police department in the middle of the night as he was constantly being threatened by drug peddlers in which the police dispatched CRPF to monitor his residents throughout the night  “Around 80 percent of residents in Block E are from outside the state and these people are the ones who are ruling the locality,” he said.
