Concern over unrepaired dyke in Halem

From a Correspondent

Biswath Chariali, May 27: Hundreds of families under Kekurijan Gaon Panchayat and linibari Gaon Panchayat under Halem Revenue Circle in Gohpur subdivision have been allegedly forced to spend sleepless nights due to the broken part of the dyke along the Chengelijan River for the last couple of months as that part still remains unrepaired.

The surging water of the river had breached the dyke near Garha Line village and as a result, water flooded the villages of Garha Line, Bogabasti Gopchar, Balaybasti, Laal Dalang and Kekurigaon under Kekurijan Gaon Panchayat and Hatimara, Chorabasti and lanibari villages under linibari Gaon Panchayat. The flood caused severe damage to property and paddy fields of the villagers and a section of them had to take shelter in relief camps. Last year also, the villagers had to make coexistence with the flooding water. They had appealed to the authorities to take necessary steps to repair the dyke, but their appeal allegedly fell into deaf ears.

The departments concerned have not undertaken any concrete step yet to heal the miseries of the affected people. With the monsoon knocking at the door, the villagers are at a loss about how to protect their properties this time. They are also not satisfied with the recent activity of starting repair work in a portion of the breached dyke under MREGA by the Panchayat.
