SHILLONG: The Congress has condemned the attempt of the BJP to run down Mahatma Gandhi and late Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi.

“It was condemnable that a section of political leadership belonging to the opposite camp has unleased a campaign to vilify not only Mahatma Gandhi but other stalwarts including late Rajiv Gandhi,” Victor Keishing, Secretary, All India Congress Committee in-charge, Meghalaya said on Tuesday.

Keishing was speaking as the chief guest at the Anti-Terrorism Day function to observe the martyrdom of Rajiv Gandhi.

He also hoped that the results of the general elections to be declared on May 23, would uphold the principles which were laid down by the stalwarts of the party.

Kieshing while addressing the party members at the Congress Bhavan took pride in the fact that he belonged to the Indian National Congress.

He said that the party was upholding the Constitution of India and looking after the rights and privileges of all sections of the people, irrespective of the caste, creed, religious, faith and culture.

It may be mentioned that during the recently concluded MP election in the country, during an election rally, Prime Minister, Narendra Modi launched a frontal attack on Rajiv Gandhi.

“Your father was termed Mr Clean by his courtiers, but his life ended as Bhrashtachari No. 1 [Corrupt No. 1], said PM Modi” taking on AICC president Rahul Gandhi directly.

Meanwhile, BJP candidate from Bhopal Lok Sabha seat Pragya Singh Thakur had said that Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin Nathuram Godse, was a patriot.

The programme started with singing of “Vande Mataram”, lighting of the ceremonial lamp and offering of floral tribute before the portrait Bharat Ratna Rajiv Gandhi and ended with the National Anthem.
