Congress happy with rural poll performance in the panchayat poll

GUWAHATI: The Opposition Congress is happy with its performance in the panchayat poll in the State. The party feels that it has performed beyond its expectations.

Talking to the media at Rajiv Bhawan in Guwahati on Friday, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) general secretary Mukul Sarma said: “A slogan that goes in Assam is – Dispur jaar, panchayat taar (the panchayat seats are for the ruling party or parties). Going this age-old slogan, the Congress would have been rooted out in rural Assam in this panchayat poll. However, nothing of that sort has happened. We’ve fared much better in the poll. The number of seats we’ve won is much more than the number of Assembly and parliamentary segments under us. While in power, we used to get around 80 percent panchayat seats. However, the BJP hasn’t even won 50 percent of the seats. To win these seats the ruling party had to use chopper services, besides flexing muscles. We thank the voters of rural Assam for lending us their support.”
