Congress Leader Shashi Tharoor’s “Outlandish” Naga Headgear Remark Creates Strong Objection

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has expressed his strong objection and dissatisfaction on the bizarre comment made on the Naga headgear recently. Although the Chief Minister has not named anyone directly, he has asked the responsible person to offer an apology and withdraw the derogatory remark.

Using his Twitter handle, Neiphiu Rio says, " Nagas have rich heritage & vibrant culture. We are proud of our history & traditions. The Naga headgear is renowned & gifted with honour, definitely not outlandish. Mutual respect makes India a great nation. One must apologize & withdraw statements that hurt others sentiments.”

The Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor had made certain derogatory remarks regarding the Prime Minister wearing different attires and headgear in different places of India. However, while making comment on the PM's choice of wearing traditional attires, Tharoor pronounced the Naga headgear too in context and this has lately outraged the Nagaland Chief Minister cum the head of the Peoples’ Democratic Alliance government in Nagaland.

Mr. Tharoor said at a seminar in Thiruvananthapuram, “You see him in Naga headgears with feathers. You have seen him in various kinds of extraordinary outfits which is a right thing for a prime minister to do. Indira Gandhi has also been photographed wearing various kinds of costumes. But why he still always says no to one?”

Such remarks ushering in the Naga headgear have drawn a sharp response from Union minister Kiren Rijiju as well. Rijiju has opined that this is an insult of the tribals and people from the North-East.

Most of the leaders and ministers of the ruling party have come up with strong objections and criticism against the Congress MP. Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Rajyavardhan Rathore too have tweeted his opinion like this, "Shashi Tharoor insults the proud cultural heritage of the people of North-East. This condescension & arrogance towards the people of India have become hallmarks of @INCIndia,”
