Congress Stages Protest Against Bharat Narah, Rani Narah

LAKHIMPUR: Though the date of first phase of Panchayat Poll is drawing nearer, the Opposition party Congress is not potent enough to take the advantage of anti-incumbent attitude of the voters in some Gaon Panchayats (GP) in Lakhimpur district due to candidate related conflict.

An example of such GP is Subansiri GP under Ghilamora ZPC in Dhakuakhona subdivision where dissident Congress workers staged protest alleging vulgar politics against former Cabinet Minister Bharat Narah and present Rajya Sabha MP Rani Narah. The aggrieved party activists demonstrated protest on the Bali Medak Bridge shouting slogans against both of them along with party leaders Dilip Kaman and Manik Chutia.

In this regard, a section of Congress activists alleged that some unknown and unwanted persons were given ticket as party candidates for the GP president, AP member and ZPC member through cash transaction. “Though people wanted Moni Kaman getting ticket as ZPC member from Congress for Ghilamora ZPC, Geetawali Kaman Changmai was given the party ticket hurting the sentiment of true Congress workers.

Similarly, Digen Regan was nominated as candidate of Subansiri GP president instead of Guneswar Kaman while Lakhimai Narah was nominated as AP member instead of Punyeswari Kaman”, they alleged. Being irked with these candidates, the dissident Congress workers stood against conducting election campaign in support of them.
