Congress to defend Constitution and Article 244 (A), Rahul Gandhi assures

HOWRAGHAT, Feb 11: Dima Hasao District Congress president Nirmal Langthasa led a delegation of Congress leaders of Karbi Anglong, West Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao autonomous district to meet Congress president Rahul Gandhi  recently at the All India Congress Committee Headquarter, Delhi.

 The delegation submitted a memorandum to the party president stating its variance on the anticipated move of the Assam Government for scrapping Article 244 (A) of the Indian Constitution. During interaction, the delegation apprised Rahul Gandhi that special constitutiol provision had been made in the Constitution of India for creation of an Autonomous State within the state of Assam comprising the hill districts of Assam, mely Dima Hasao, East and West Karbi Anglong districts. The Congress president assured them that the Congress would stand to defend the Constitution and Article 244 (A). He also assured the delegation that essential proposal would be taken by the Congress. The issue came to light after Minister of State for Home Affairs, Kiren Rijiju responded to a query in the Parliament stated that the Assam Government had sent proposal to do away with the Article 244 (A) of the Indian Constitution.
