Conrad K Sangma urges journalists  to earn trust of society

Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma on Friday urged journalists of the state to earn the trust of the society.

Addressing the press fraternity at a seminar on the theme “Journalistic Ethics in the Digital Age,” organised by the Shillong Press Club to mark the National Press Day, Conrad said, “Build up your reputation. You are here not just for one day but to continue in the system for the long run.”

Expressing concern over incidences of fake news, the Chief Minister said that it is about being responsible with everything one does and it should start with the media and ends with it too. He said that the digital world is dynamic and therefore, impossible to put a curb on it even as he added that the digital world must be harnessed by the media fraternity. Conrad also said that there is a lot mote that needs to be done to curb cyber-crimes.

The Chief Minister also pointed out that in the recent past the state government faced a situation when the internet had to be shut down due to misuse of the social media by certain elements.

Saying that the experience was a wake-up call for the government, Conrad said. “People were upset when internet was stopped. We simply had to do it because we do not have the technology to filter or stop such news.”

He also said that his government has realised how to use technology to communicate the various work done by it.
