CPI(M) opposes Vedanta’s entry in exploration sector in Tripura

Agartala: The CPI(M) has opposed the reported permission given to the private sector company Vedanta Limited by the central government to participate in the exploration activities of the state alongside the state-owned Navaratna company the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation.

According to the report, the Ministry for Petroleum and Natural Gas has already accorded permission to the company though on what basis it was given and when they will start work is not yet clear.

However, the CPI(M) has sharply reacted over the decision and said it is part of the Narendra Modi government’s larger plan to weaken the public sector companies. They said it also will affect the interest of the employees and the unemployed youths.

A statement issued by the CPI(M) state secretariat urged the Narendra Modi led the government to refrain from such dangerous game and also appealed to the people of the country to raise voice against it.

The ONGC started exploration activities in Tripura since the late sixties and discovered huge reserve of natural gas beneath its soil. Several major power plants are running based on the gas explored by ONGC. However, a source indicated that though the private company has been allowed to start exploration it will not affect the interest of ONGC.
