Create Bodoland on the lines of Telenga: ABSU

From our Correspondent

KOKRAJHAR, October 14: The All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) on Wednesday staged a 12-hour tiol highway blockade demanding early creation of separate state of Bodoland on the lines of Telenga to ensure protection and all-round development of Bodos under articles 2 and 3 of the Indian Constitution.

Hundreds of ABSU activists and supporters blocked the tiol Highway 31 (C) at Ramfalbil from 5 am to 5 pm. The blockade was also supported by the tiol Democratic Front Bodoland (NDFB-Progressive) and People’s Joint Action Committee for Bodoland Movement (PJACBM). The movement groups will block NH-15 at Udalguri on Thursday.

ABSU president Promod Boro told media persons said that the ABSU had been struggling to put pressure on the Government of India to resolve the long-pending Bodoland issue since the last 48 years and thousands of patriotic Bodo people had been killed by the government forces, numerous women were raped and thousands of houses were burnt down. He said that the government at the Centre, be it Congress or BJP, had not adopted any policy in favour of creation of the Bodoland state.

Boro said the movement group insisted upon the government to take initiative to resolve the Bodoland issue without further delay. He warned that if the government ignored the issue then the group would be compelled to intensify its movement at any level in a democratic way and for any untoward situation that might take place, the government would be solely responsible.

Boro said the Government of India had created three new States - Chattisgarh, Jharkhand and Uttaranchal in 2000 and another new State Telenga was also created recently. On those lines, Bodoland should also be created.

Boro strongly condemned the O Boro Suraksah Manch for calling bandh by overlapping the scheduled date of movement of the ABSU. He said it was a deliberate attempt to create a conflict among the peace-loving people. He said the movement groups had never opposed or disrespected any declared movement of other organizations, including O Boro Suraksah Manch. He also said that the Manch should better realize that the ABSU had no intention to interrupt the programme of organizations and so the Manch should also support their cause.

President of the NDFB (P), Dhiran Boro, president of People’s Joint Action Committee for Boroland Movement (PJACBM), Jebraram Mashahary, former Rajya Sabha MP Urkhao Gwra Brahma and leaders of other movement groups took part in the blockade. The 12-hour tiol highway blockade totally paralyzed transportation in the north-eastern States.
