'Crime can be effectively contained if people realize their rights, duties'

DIGBOI, Nov 27: The State Police Accountability Commission (SPAC) Assam held a legal awareness-cum -brief interactive session on Monday at the premises of the Digboi Police Station in Tinsuka district. The chairman of the commission, Brojen Prasad Katakey, while addressing the gathering, reiterated the objective, functioning and role of the commission, beside urging the house to actively avail the avenues as and when the situations demand for the greater cause of the people.
Underlining the huge functiol jurisdiction in terms of geography and shortage of man power in dispensing justice in the existing system, Katakey urged the gathering to further download the message to the people in rural pockets to seek assistance of the commission as and when the accountability of the police was at stake. “Awareness among the people is primarily one of the ingredients that determine the success of the commission,” said the chairperson of SPAC.  
Katakey, who  has been on official tour since November 26, met the people of remote areas in Sadiya and said that the mece of crime could only be effectively contained if the common people realized their rights and duties and came forward without fear to the appropriate platform to reform the lacue.
Punya Saikia, State literary pension holder, Hitendrath Sarmah, former Principal of Margherita College who was also the vice-president of Digboi garik Committee, Ajit Borah, the president of the Tha Committee, Tarun Hazarika, the president of Digboi  AOC Labour Union, SDPO Margherita D.Morang , Inspector Mahesh Chandra Borah, COVDO Digboi Police Station, chairman of Digboi Town Committee and president of Women Cell took part in the session. Katakey said that doctors were often seen or heard of declining even first aid treatment to the needy on the ground that the FIR or police information was not served regarding the incident. But according to him, no such provision existed and as such, the matter might be challenged.
