Crimes against 'minors by minors' on the rise in State

GUWAHATI, April 6: Assam is caught up in a similarity of sorts! When one looks back at the records of crimils and their victims during the past six years one mostly gets ‘juveniles’ as ‘crimils’ and ‘minors’ as ‘victims’.

A senior official in the crime branch of the State police force has said that when the records of crimes of the past six years in the State are examined, it becomes crystal clear that most of the persons who committed the crimes are juvenile delinquents. “A striking similarity is that most of the victims of the crimes are also minors,” the police official said.

Taking the records of crimes in the State from 2010-2016, the official has said that as many as 1,275 cases against rape of minor girls were registered in the State. “While 39 cases of rape of minor girls were registered in 2010, 40 such cases were registered in 2011.  The number of such cases suddenly rose to 333 in 2012, 230 in 2013, 271 in 2014, 42 in 2015 and 464 in 2016,” he said.

In the past six years, the official said, 98 of the rape victims were of the age group 6-12 years, 407 victims were of the age group of 12-16 years and 767 were 16-18 years of age.

When asked as to why juvenile crimes are on the rise in the State, the police official said: “Lack of sex education in school leads to the occurrences of more such crimes in society. Nowadays, a child sees the use of drugs, alcohol and other social evils at home. A section of children are hooked on to mobile phones with internet connections. They see in you tube, facebook etc., some scenes which they shouldn’t see that their age. Such children gossip such things among their peers and get maturity out of sync with their age. Since they generally don’t share such experiences with their parents, the situation is fraught with the risk of children going astray. Imparting sex education by teachers in schools and conscious parents can make children realize the ill effects of such developments.”

To back up his statement that minors are more involved in committing crimes nowadays, the police officer further said that two of the three youths who had committed the recent rape of a minor in Batadraba in gaon are minors.
