Crimes Against Women Witnessing A Rising Trend In Assam

GUWAHATI: Cases of crimes against women have been witnessing a rising graph in Assam during the three-year period from 2016 to 2018. According to police sources, a total of 19,688 cases were registered across the State in 2016 while the number rose to 21,298 in 2017 and it further increased to 24,556 in 2018.

Registered cases of rape charges in 2018 were 1,909; while in 2017 there were 1,708 such cases. With respect to dowry death, there were 166 registered cases in 2018 while in 2017 there were 150 such cases.

In three other instances as well there has been a significant increase of crimes against women in the State. These are with respect to ‘Cruelty by husband’, ‘Kidnapping of women/girls’, and ‘Molestation’. Altogether 9,327 cases were registered under the head of ‘Cruelty by husband’ in 2016 while it increased to 10,580 cases in 2017; and it rose further to 11,999 cases in 2018.

With respect to cases registered against the head ‘Kidnapping of women/girls’, a total of 4,997 cases were registered in 2016. The number of such cases rose to 5,186 in 2017 while it increased to 6,269 in 2018.

Similarly, while 3,416 cases of molestation were registered across the State in 2016; 3,595 cases were registered in 2017; and 4,143 cases were registered in 2018.
