CRPF firing aftermath: Uneasy calm in Tihu

LBARI, July 19: Uneasy calm prevailed in Tihu area in lbari district today  after the incident of firing by a CRPF jawan on protesters of Tihu Subdivision Demand Committee Friday.  

Himangshu Tamuly, a Class ix student and a CRPF ASI Deven Ch Bardoloi were killed in the indiscrimite firing, while six persons were seriously injured. A massive protest rally  was held at Tihu on Saturday strongly condemned the attack and demanded adequate compensation for the victims.

The CRPF constable who was on duty suddenly opened fire on his own officer and killed him on the spot, simultaneously also killing  high school student Himangshu Tamuly.

Significantly,  the entire incident took place in front of the lbari Additiol Deputy Commissioner, who also sustained injuries.  

“The entire incident occurred in the very presence of lbari Additiol Deputy Commissioner Mrigesh rayan Barua who also sustained injuries when he jumped forward to overpower the CRPF constable who had gone berserk, with bullets also hitting five other persons. While a student called Himangshu Baishya also died on the spot, five persons including three CRPF personnel have been shifted to the GMC Hospital in Guwahati,” a top police official had said.  

The protesters also demanded a high-level inquiry into the firing and stern punishment to those responsible for the attack. The lbari unit of AASU took out a silent procession on Saturday.

AASU president Dipanka th who visited the slain student’s family, held the State and Central governments responsible for the incident.
