CRPF Head Constable Maneswar Basumatary From Assam Among Martyrs

GUWAHATI: CRPF Head Constable Maneswar Basumatary from Assam was one of the 49 martyrs in the terrorist suicide attack at Pulwama in Kashmir on Thursday even as another CRPF jawan from Assam sustained minor injuries. Basumatary hailed from Kalabari village near Tamulpur in Baksa district. He joined the para-military force in 1990. Basumatary had been on a month’s leave recently and returned for duty only on February 4. A few minutes before the fatal incident, Maneswar had his last telephonic talk with his family members in Assam. He has left behind his wife, a 25-year-old daughter, and a 21-year-old son.

The other CRPF trooper from Assam who sustained minor injuries in the attack was Kanak Kalita from Malaibari near Guwahati. Troopers Pabitra Barman from Bongaigaon and Ananta Saikia from Golaghat were also in the convoy.

As the news of the death of Maneswar Basumatary spread, crowds of people including the local MLA (Tamulpur) Immanuel Mushahary, leaders of ABSU and other organizations flocked to his house to offer their condolences to members of the bereaved family. Terming the suicide attack, as “an act of cowardice”, MLA Mushahary condemned the act. He further stated that the State Government and the BTC authorities would jointly take care of the family of martyr Maneswar Basumatary.

Meanwhile, it has been learnt that the body would arrive LGBI airport on Saturday morning. After the arrival, it will be taken to his village where the last rites would be carried out with full military honours.
