LAKHIMPUR: “The cultural unity and harmony among the people of Assam as Assamese began to be framed during the reign of the Koch royal dynasty. Mahapurush Sankaradeva spearheaded the noble work under the patronage of Koch King Nara Narayan and his younger brother, valorous general Mahaveer Chilarai. The cultural harmony framed under the patronage of the Koch royal dynasty is the foundation of the Assamese community at present,” stated Harendra Narayan Dutta, retired Professor of Dibrugarh University, in Lakhimpur on Tuesday.

Taking part in the open session of the 509th Chilarai Divas held at Lakhimpur District Library under the auspices of the Lakhimpur district body of Koch Rajbonshi Sanmilani (KRS) and All Koch Rajbonshi Students’ Union (AKRSU), the former State president of the KRS framed his lecture on the noble contribution of Chilarai towards strengthening the Koch community in Assam and to the Assamese as a whole. Further, he reacted over the Koch community’s long-pending demand to be conferred Scheduled Tribe status along with the other five communities of the State, which allegedly was revolving in the political vortex of the BJP-led Union Government without yielding an effective result during the last five years.

Regarding the issue, he stated, “If the large number of voters belonging to the six communities concerned oppose the BJP politically, the political party must come forward to pay due honour to our long-pending demand.”

On the other hand, the function was inaugurated by academician Tileswar Borah who laid stress on preventing the forgery and manipulation of Koch Rajbonshi certificates by non-Koch people. In this regard, he emphasized launching a flawless census among the people of the Koch community across the State.

Retired session judge Ghana Kanta Dutta, Koch Rajbonshi Sahitya Sabha Lakhimpur unit president Gobin Chandra Borah, AJYCP State committee assistant secretary Saurabh Das, Lakhimpur AASU secretary Dhanmoni Dutta along with many other dignitaries of the KRS and AKRSU and other organizations took part in the event. On the other hand, the Dahakuakhona district unit of KRS observed the Chilarai Jayanti at the Kristi Bhavan of Jiyamoriya village under the Dhakuakhona subdivision. President Sureswar Borah chaired the open session of the event organized on the occasion while former president Purna Koch took part in the programme as the appointed speaker.
