Culture, sports & felicitations make I-Day celebration vibrant

Silchar, Aug 16: 70th Independence Day was celebrated at the District Sports Association’s (DSA) ground of this town, in a befitting manner with gaiety and patriotic fervour. After the unfurling of the tiol Flag, which was followed by the parade, a host of cultural events were organized to mark the occasion.  The dais along with the ground wore a festive look as a number of cultural programmes highlighted the heritage of the country. For a number of years, DSA has been official place for celebrating the Day. The district administration took special care of all the aspects of the programmes.

 Proper arrangements were made for the officials and important persons. Hot and sultry weather condition failed to dampen people’s spirit from engaging in merry-making as they braved the weather and came out in large numbers to take part in the daylong programme and make it a grand success. The ambience was filled with patriotic songs, of Lata Mangeshkar and other stalwarts of music and some finest patriotic compositions of the Oscar-winner composer, music director and singer, A R Rahman, played through loudspeaker systems.

 The VIPs present on the occasion also felicitated rank holders of HSLC, AHMLC, Senior HMLC and Higher Secondary examitions of both SEBA and CBSE boards. Along with the students, a number of persons, including freedom fighters, sportspersons and farmers were also felicitated on the occasion, for their outstanding service, achievement in various fields and disciplines. Paritosh Chanda, a senior badminton player who has brought laurels to the place and Sandhya Singh, a young and talented footballer and athlete were among the sportsperson felicitated by the administration. Jyotsa Rani Chakraborty, a resident of Sharatpalli, Silchar, was also acknowledged by the administration. She is a master craftsperson.

 In addition to this, Family Identity Cards and Krishak Identity Cards were also distributed among a number of persons. In an endeavour to boost up sports activity, an assortment of sports equipments were distributed to the secretaries of Lion’s Club, Bengali Forward Club and Tarapur Mahila Samiti of Silchar. A host of cultural dance items added an extra flavour. Dance artistes performed diverse forms and kinds of dance, Rajasthani, Harayanvi, Manipuri and ga dance to me a few. The daylong programme ended with a lathi-show where participants displayed excellent defence skills and fight moves.
