Curfew further relaxed in Shillong

Shillong, June 18: Curfew has been relaxed further in Motphran and adjoining localities of Shillong city which were hit by violent protests recently. According to East Khasi Hills District Magistrate Peter Sansan Dkhar, curfew in areas falling under Lumdiengjri Police Station like Jaiaw, Mawkhar, Umsohsun, Riatsamthiah, Wahingdoh, Mission, Mawprem, Lumdiengjri, Lamavilla, Qualapatty, Wahthapbru, Sunny Hill, Cantonment, Mawlong Hat, including Cantonment Beat House Areas (excluding localities beyond Umshyrpi bridge) has been relaxed for 16 hours from June 19.

“The curfew has been relaxed with effect from 5 am to 9 pm in these areas and is promulgated again with effect from 9 pm to 5 am until further orders,” Dkhar said in his order. Meanwhile, in areas falling under Shillong Agglomeration, curfew has been relaxed for 18 hours from June 19 from 5 am to 11 pm and is promulgated again from 11 pm to 5 am until further order.

Internet on mobile phones was also restored on Monday afternoon after it had been suddenly suspended on Saturday.

Commissioner and Secretary for Home department S Kharlyngdoh said in a notification that the government, after receiving reports from Director General of Police Swaraj Bir Singh that a serious law-and-order situation continues to prevail in Khasi & Jaintia Hills and Ri Bhoi district, has appealed to all to curb fake news and spreading of rumours with vested interests. The Meghalaya Police has appealed to the public to desist from sending provocative or hate posts/rumours/fake news, etc in the social media so that normalcy can be restored in Shillong city at the earliest.
