Curfew further relaxed  in violence-hit areas

Shillong, June 9: With normalcy returning to Shillong after parts of the city was hit by violent protests last week, the district administration on Saturday has decided to further relax curfew.

According to East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Pewter Sansan Dkhar, curfew has been relaxed for 11 hours in areas under Lumdiengjri Police Station that include Jaiaw, Mawkhar, Umsohsun, Riatsamthiah, Wahingdoh, Mission, Mawprem, Lumdiengjri, Lamavilla, Qualapatty, Wahthapbru, Sunny Hill, Cantonment, Mawlong Hat including Cantonment Beat House Areas (excluding localities beyond Umshyrpi bridge) on Sunday.

“The curfew will be relaxed with effect from 7 am to 6 pm and will be promulgated again with effect from 6 pm and until further orders,” Dkhar said.

Meanwhile, night curfew in areas unaffected by the protests has also been relaxed.

According to the Deputy Commissioner, night curfew from Sunday will be imposed in Shillong agglomeration from 9 pm to 5 am until further orders.

An altercation and an assault on three persons at Sweepers’ Colony, Them Ïew Mawlong, on May 31 had led to the violent protests at Motphran.

Stone pelting by protesters and use of tear gas by security forces was the order of the day since last May 31, till June 4, especially at Mawkhar and Motphran.

The protesters also demanded shifting of the residents of Sweepers’ Colony.

While SMS services have been restored since the evening of June 7, internet services is still being suspended.

The services were suspended to thwart the spread of rumours and unverified news.
