MANGALDAI: With a view to ensure the ensuing general election in free and fair manner without any pressure or threat from the anti-social forces, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has already issued strict instructions to each and every district election authority to take up necessary steps for depositing all licensed firearms in the nearest police station. Similarly, the ECI has also issued strict instructions to put behind bars all the criminals who have already been served with non-bailable warrant of arrest (NBWA).

Accordingly, the district police of Darrang have geared up to act promptly and effectively. Talking to The Sentinel in this connection, Darrang Superintendent of Police Amrit Bhuyan informed about the execution of the pending cases of NBWA since the month of February.

“A total of 329 cases have been pending since 2012-2013 and we already have executed 60 per cent of it and 151 cases are yet to be executed. We are highly hopeful to execute all the pending cases within the stipulated period,” said the Superintendent of Police. Talking about the deposit of the licensed firearms, he informed that out of total 1,137 licensed firearms, 1,127 licensees had deposited their firearms. He also appreciated the spirit of the licensees in depositing their firearms in the respective police station in response to the appeal made by the district police.

On the other hand, the district administration, since the day the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) came into effect, has removed 185 hoardings in different government or public premises where photographs or slogans of ministers or any political party were displayed. The Revenue Circle-level MCC monitoring cell led by the respective Circle Officers of the five Revenue Circles in Mangaldai election district, have also removed 278 banners, 555 posters and erased nine wall writings in addition to the hoardings.

Meanwhile, the large-size hoardings, especially of Swachh Bharat Mission, raised by the Public Health Engineering Department were almost broken into pieces at the time of removal which has raised a big question about the quality of work of those hoardings which were installed only in the months of August and September last year.
