Deb urges Rubber Board for value addition

Agartala, May 26: Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb urged the Rubber Board authorities to take steps to add value to rubber that is being produced in Tripura. He made the appeal during a meeting with vice chairman of the Rubber Board S Jayasooryan at Kochi in Kerala, where the secretary of the board Rajagopalan was also present. He told the board officials to increase domestic processing of rubber and to train local people in skill development in rubber sector so that the rubber based industries can grow in the State.

Chief Minister also requested the officials of the board to reintroduce insurance scheme by the board for rubber plantations in Tripura and coverage of all rubber growers from present 20 per cent to a higher number. Both the vice president and the secretary assured the Chief Minister of providing all-possible assistance and support for the speedy progress of rubber sector in Tripura. Tripura is the second largest rubber producing State in the country after Kerala. But recently the local rubber producers are facing difficulty and are also not getting good remunerative of their produce. Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, who went to Kerala to participate in campaign for his party in a bye-election, also had a meeting with the officials of the Spices Board of India and requested them to augment spices production in the State. There are enough scope for increasing the production of ginger, black pepper, turmeric and chilli, he added. He also urged the board officials to explore the possibility of producing spices like nutmeg, clove, cumin and coriander in Tripura.
