SHILLONG: The Deputy Chief Minister of Meghalaya and NPP leader Prestone Tynsong on Saturday informed that the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) will meet next week to discuss on the issue of a common candidate for the Lok Sabha polls.

Speaking to reporters after inaugurating the Multi-Species Modern Abattoir at Mawiong, Tynsong said, “As a coalition alliance within the government, the MDA will meet again next week with all its partners in the alliance to discuss this issue of a common candidate to contest the MP election.”

Prestone Tynsong said that the Lok Sabha polls are approaching and time is short hence this issue needs to be sorted out quickly through discussion with our partners.

When answering to a question, Prestone Tynsong said, “It is the duty of each political party within the alliance to come up with its own candidate and present his or her name in the meeting and the MDA will decide which candidate is best suited to contest the polls.”

On the decision of UDP to announce the name of Jemino Mawthoh as its candidate of the Lok Sabha polls, he said that UDP made its own decision and other parties can do the same. However, the final call will be made by the MDA.

On the statement made by NPP national president and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma that the party will field MP candidates from all the 25 seats in the North-east including the Shillong parliamentary constituency, Tynsong said, “This is still under discussion, however no final decision on this matter has been made.”

He said that the final decision will be taken once all the partners within the MDA seat for a meeting to discuss on this issue.
