Deferring of Polls Law-And-Order Now Main Issue In East Tripura Polls

Agartala: The political scenario in Tripura has taken a new turn with the Election Commission’s decision to defer the polling for the East Tripura Lok Sabha constituency. The polling which was scheduled for April 18 will be held on April 23. After the announcement, the sole issue of the election has now become law-and-order. The Election Commission notification has clearly indicated that the decision was taken after receiving reports from the Returning Officers and the Chief Electoral Officer of the State that the situation in the constituency is not conducive for holding free and fair election. It also apprehended disturbances and sought more Central armed forces to ensure a free and fair election.

Law and order is a State subject and the State Government is responsible for its deterioration. It was satisfactory when the Election Commission notified the date for polling. Since the election was notified, the administration went under the control of the commission and, if any deterioration took place, it was during this period.

Now, the central issue for the election becomes who is responsible for the deterioration of law and order?

The Opposition CPI(M) and Congress is accusing the ruling BJP for their high-handedness in all matters and the allegation of large scale violence and intimidation in West Tripura emboldened their stand. On the other hand, the BJP alleging that threat and communal instigation by the CPI(M) and Congress were reasons for the disturbances. Education Minister Ratan Lal Nath alleged that CPI(M) leader Bijon Dhar has told his workers to take up rifles and canons while the Pradesh Congress president Pradyot Kishor’s statements is harmful for maintaining harmony. According to them behaviour of these two parties were responsible for deferring the election by the commission.

Whatever may be the reason, the deferring of election has now become the central issue for election in East Tripura constituency suppressing development and other issues.
