Delhi CEO sends directives to BJP over NaMo TV

Guwahati: The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) in Delhi has directed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) not to telecast any content on its advertising platform NaMo TV without the permission of the relevant authority.

The CEO has come with the directives two days after the Election Commission of India gave an order that all recorded programs displayed on NaMo TV without getting it certified by the relevant authority.

On Thursday, the election commission said that since NaMo TV was sponsored by the BJP, all recorded programs shown on the platform must be pre-certified by the media certification and monitoring committee of Delhi.

The commission also said that the political publicity content shouldn't be shown on NaMo TV without pre-certification and if it is done so it should be removed immediately.

The CEO has written to BJP following the election commission's directive to ensure that all political content which was not approved by the relevant authority should be removed with immediate effect across all DTH platforms which telecast NaMo TV.

The officials also said that two officials have been deployed to watch NaMo TV and monitor its content as a precautionary measure.

According to an official, political parties usually submit audio-visual content for pre-certification without specifying on which platform it will be aired. The official said that the content might be aired during an election rally or even on the party's official website and social media accounts.

The opposition Congress party had filed a complaint with the election commission saying that the NaMo TV service was disturbing the level playing field at the time of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Based on the Congress's complaint the election commission asked the Delhi CEO to file a report on the issue.

The logo of NaMo TV has been approved by the CEO of Delhi which the BJP said was part of the NaMo app that it owns but did not certify the content as it contained old speeches of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
