Delhi Police Arrests Suspected Attackers of Umar Khalid, Duo Claims Responsibility on Social Media

New Delhi: Two alleged attackers who shot at sedition charged student leader Umar Khalid were arrested by Delhi police today after they allegedly claimed the responsibility in a video clip that went viral in the social media.

In the video clip, the duo claimed that the attack was an “Independence Day gift” to Indians.

Following the claims made on the video in Social Media, Delhi Police on Monday managed to arrest the two men who claimed responsibility for the attack on JNU student leader Umar Khalid outside the Constitution Club in New Delhi last week.

As per the Police, the two suspected attackers identified as Darvesh Shahpur and Naveen Dalal. They were picked up at the wee hours on Sunday from Haryana. The duo are now in police custody and the interrogation process is on. “We are verifying their claims and their interrogations are on,” said a Delhi Police Official.

It may be mentioned that, the duo claimed the responsibility on the attack on JNU student leader just a day after the incident. In an uploaded video on the social media, the duo claimed that the attack was an “Independence Day gift” to the nation.

As per the video, the suspected duo also appealed to the cops not to “harass” others and suspect other students for the incident.

Sources further informed that they claimed in the video that they would “surrender” at the residence of Sikh revolutionary Shaheed Kartar Singh Sarabha in Sarabha village of Ludhiana on Friday but the duo were not present as per their commitment.

Earlier on the day of the attack, Delhi Police officials attempted to match the photo of the two persons along with the prime suspect who were captured in CCTV footage which was recovered from the spot. Following the attack, police had also recorded the statement of Umar Khalid and some other people who were the eyewitness to the incident. A case under section 307 (attempt to murder) and Arms Act has also been registered.
