SHILLONG: The Confederation of Hynniewtrep Social Organisations (CoHSO) has demanded that the State Government introduces Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Meghalaya. This demand was voiced in a rally organized by the CoHSO to protest the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill at Students’ Field, Jaiaw, in Shillong on Thursday.

Thousands thronged the stadium to show their angst against the CAB.

At the rally, apart from the constituents of the CoHSO comprising of 13 pressure groups, members of various political parties like Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), HS Shylla, MLAs Sanbor Shullai of the BJP, Renikton Tongkhar of the HSPDP and MDCs were present.

Speaking at the rally, Shylla said the Central Government will not listen to the ‘tribals’ of the northeast region, since the ‘majority community’ in other parts of the country is happy with the passing of the bill.

“We are shouting in the wilderness. It is time for us to demand the implementation of ILP,” the KHADC, chief said.

“The Chief Minister and UDP chief Dr Donkupar Roy must convince the Governor to give assent to the ILP which was passed by the KHADC,” Shylla said.

He also slammed former chief minister Dr Mukul Sangma on the Meghalaya Residents, Safety and Security Act, 2016.

According to Shylla, the Act facilitates the entry of migrants into the State.

He pointed out that as per the Section 18, which talks about the function of facilitation centres, sub-section (2) (d) of the Act, says, “to facilitate the entry of tourists, or visitors to the State without causing any inconvenience.”

Shylla also reminded that Home Minister Rajnath Singh had told the Rajya Sabha that the main aim of ILP is to prevent the settlement of other Indians in the State where ILP is prevalent in order to protect the population of tribals.

He has also set the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government a week’s deadline to give assent to the ILP.

Meanwhile, on Thursday a public meeting, Shylla announced his resignation from the primary membership of the NPP.

He had already announced that he will not be contesting the MDC polls slated for February 27.

Shylla had expressed his disappointment that the State Government has not given its assent to even a single bill passed by the KHADC. “I wonder how will the MDCs approach the people asking for a fresh mandate,” he asked.
