Dhaneswari Devi: A tribute

A social activist of Lakhipur in Cachar Dhaneswari Devi breathed her last on December 29, 2015 at her tive place at Lakhipur Khuman after a brief illness. She was 69.

An energetic and promising persolity of the locality, Dhaneswari Devi had her early education in the Earle High School, Lakhipur and after completing her Secondary Education in the year 1978, she underwent her under-graduate and post-graduate studies from Manipur University, Canchipur, Imphal. She passed MA in Manipuri Literature from Manipur University in the year 1985. As a student, she actively participated in a number of union affairs. However, after passing her MA from MU, she returned to her tive place at Lakhipur and joined the then newly formed regiol political party AGP in the year 1985. Even-so, she believed in the women’s empowerment sustaining economic development, and so, associated closely with many social activities including setting up of Weaving Centres in the area. She also believed women’s empowerment at the grass root level through Panchayati Raj Institution at a time when-the 73rd Amendment to the Indian Constitution was underway. She was so popular among her contemporaries in the area that she was elected President of Lakhipur yagram Gaon Panchayat (GP) uncontested in the year 1991 itself. At her initiative, during her incumbency, number of approach roads to remote villages in Lakhipur yagram GP was constructed.

She leaves behind her daughter Indura, brother L Dhan Babu Singha and host of relatives. On the day of her Shraddha ceremony we deeply pray to the almighty for eterl peace to the departed soul.
