Haflong, May 19: For the first time in the history of Dima Hasao, Bharatiya Jata Party candidate BB Hagjer won the 16 Haflong (ST) LAC by defeating his nearest Congress (I) candidate Nirmal Langthasa with a margin of 8,306 votes, securing 51,996 votes while Niramal Langthasa secured 43,862 votes.

The counting of votes was started at 8 am on Thursday which was of 15 rounds and concluded at about 2.30 PM. After declaring B B Hagjer of BJP as winner by the Returning Officer and Deputy Commissioner Amarendra Barua, the jubilant supporters, party members and well-wishers of BJP accorded warm welcome to Hagjer.

Talking to media persons, B B Hagjer expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the people of Dima Hasao who wholeheartedly supported him in becoming the first BJP MLA in Dima Hasao since Independence. He assured he would try his best to keep the promises that were made in the manifesto.

Hagjer is the son of J B Hagjer who was an education minister in the Assam cabinet. When asked whether he would be given any berth in the ministry, he said the decision remained with the party only.

Congress candidate Nirmal Langthasa who was defeated by Hagjer, is the youngest son of G C Langthasa, former MLA who had retained this seat for several terms.

The conscious citizens are of the opinion that people have voted the BJP to power for a change in overall development, infrastructure and also for the uplift of the backward people of district. They hoped that this time Dima Hasao would get priority in terms of development.
