Dispur Deceived Tea Tribes: APCC Vice President Bhagirath Karan

GUWAHATI: The APCC (Assam Pradesh Congress Committee) has said that the BJP has failed to keep its promise in according ST status to the Tea Tribes.

Addressing the media at Rajiv Bhawan in Guwahati on Sunday, APCC vice president Bhagirath Karan said: “The government failed to provide lands to Tea Tribes as promised by it. Dispur also failed to set up even a single school in any tea estate area despite making the promise of erecting 100 high schools in tea gardens in the State.”

On the recent hooch tragedy that struck tea estates in Golaghat and Jorhat districts, Bhagirath Karan said: “Dispur was on record saying that it would identify the people responsible for the tragedy within 15 days and punish them.

However, one month has already elapsed after the tragedy, but not a single arrest toward that end could be made. Despite repeated assurances, the BJP-led government at Dispur has failed to fix tea labourers’ daily wage at the rate of Rs 350.”

On employment front, Karan said: “Dispur claims to have given employment opportunities to around two lakh unemployed. However,, not even 0.5 per cent of them are from the tea tribes. This is a deception of the tea tribes by the government.”
