Dispur fixes new criteria to select college principals

GUWAHATI: A teacher serving a college for more than three years will not be eligible to hold the post of principal of that particular institution.

The new eligibility criteria will come into effect soon with Dispur deciding to amend the Assam College Employees Provincialisation Rules 2010.

An official in Higher Education department told The Sentinel that the prime objective behind such move is to do away with manipulation and lobbyism that often play a role in appointment of college principals. He said many teachers in the past created an influential lobby inside their colleges to hold the post of principal.

“With introduction of the new rule, a teacher serving a college for more than three years will not be able to hold the post of principal of that particular college. But the same teacher will be eligible to become principal of another college depending on his seniority and other eligibility criterion,” the official said.

He said the rule is also expected to give renewed zeal and enthusiasm to a teacher to serve another college as principal.
