Dispur to be tough on defaulters

NON-PAYMENT OF PF, GRATUITY BY TEA ESTATES

BY OUR STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Feb 13: Around 227 tea estates in Assam are yet to pay provident fund (PF) to their workers while 119 tea estates haven’t yet paid their workers’ gratuity monies.

Informing this in the Assembly on Monday, State Labour and Employment Minister Pallab Lochon Das said, “We have already told the authorities concerned to take action against these defaulter estates. Two tea estates have already been attached by the government for not paying PF to their workers.”

Das said the government will very soon amend the Plantation Labour Act to use lands lying useless with many gardens across the State for development activities. “If the Plantation Labour Act is amended, no tea estate can stop the government from using such lands. If any tea estate tries to oppose this, action will be taken,” Das warned.

The Labour and Employment Minister further informed the House that a land bank will be prepared by the government in which all information and records relating to different types of land of the State will be systematically kept. On the basis of this land bank, action will be taken by the government, he added.
