Dibrugarh: Taking cognizance of the dangers of paid news and the way it can influence the voting behaviour to the advantage of the payer, a meeting of the ‘Media Certification and Monitoring Committee’ (MCMC) was held at the DC office on Saturday in the presence of media representatives and well as those of the political parties.

Presided over by DC Pallav Gopal Jha, the meeting revolved around the measures taken by the district administration to check cases of paid news on print and electronic media ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. Additional DC, Manoj Baruah spoke on how such cases of paid news aimed at advancing the cause of any political candidate or their political party as such can influence the right to gain information of the people for the worse. They also act as an impediment in the way of drawing logical conclusions, he held.

Baruah added that the MCMC formed for the district would keep a strict watch on all news published in both the media during the election season, and upon confirmation of any news being paid, action would be taken against both the candidate paying for the news and the form of media projecting it. Jha also said that apart from putting a check on paid news and instances of candidates promoting advertisements without prior permission, social media would be monitored.
