Doomdooma Press Club Urges Town Committee to Provide Basic Civic Amenities to People

DOOMDOOMA: About a month back, Doomdooma Press Club (DPC) along with Doomdooma Senior Citizens’ Association submitted a joint memorandum to the Doomdooma Town Committee (DDTC) to provide basic civic amenities to people, but to no avail.

This is not the first time that the scribes’ body submitted a memo to DDTC. Out of disgust, a four-member delegation of Doomdooma Press Club, led by its president Arjun Baruah and secretary Manoj Dutta, submitted another memorandum containing eleven demands to the Circle Officer of Doomdooma Revenue Circle, Pankaj Nagbongshi on Wednesday with copy to the Deputy Commissioner of Tinsukia. Incidentally, the Circle Officer is also an executive officer of DDTC.

In its memorandum, the scribes’ body demanded the speedy completion of the bridge over Doomdooma (Dibru) River across the Old Trunk Road to mitigate the growing congestion of traffic of the town. Because of illegal encroachment on the newly-constructed footpaths by a section of unscrupulous shopkeepers, the pedestrians are exposed to great risk of road traffic accidents every day. So they should be immediately evicted for greater safety of pedestrians, urged DPC.

For expansion of the town, Doomdooma Town Committee has applied for allotment of land in nearby Beesakopie TE along NH-37 to the government. This acquisition of land matter should be expedited. Besides this, DPC has demanded stoppage of unplanned and haphazard construction inside Doomdooma Town Field and to construct an indoor stadium for development of games and sports, solution to the problem plaguing the Doomdooma 30-bedded FRU, steps to complete the water supply scheme started in 1987, strong measures to stop illegal trade of illicit liquor, opium, hemp and drugs in and around Doomdooma town, imposing strict traffic rules to control the speed of green leaf-carrying trucks, taking up the matter of supplying piped gas to consumers of Doomdooma and Rupaisiding with Assam Gas Company Ltd., immediate completion of the Rajiv Gandhi Rural Sports Project which is situated just 8 km away from Doomdooma under Doomdooma Revenue Circle.

The Circle Officer gave a patient hearing to the DPC members and assured them of taking up the matter with respective departments of the district administration soon.
