Easter celebrated in Meghalaya with fervour

SHILLONG: Devotees including Christians on Sunday celebrated Easter in Meghalaya to mark the resurrection of Jesus Christ, with religious fervour.

Cathedrals and churches in the Christian-majority State were thronged by devotees for special mass and other celebratory events.

The around six-week-long lent period, which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends approximately six weeks later, before Easter Sunday.

Easter marks the culmination of Holy Week which begins with Palm Sunday. Faithful also observe 'Maundy Thursday' and 'Good Friday' during the week.

While greeting the people, Governor Tathagata Roy said, "Easter is a festival of hope celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ and it inspires millions of people over the world to imbibe the spirit of sacrifice and forgiveness."

Conveying his good wishes to the people of Meghalaya, Roy said, "May God fill your home with peace, hope and love."

Moreover, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma took to twitter to wish the people of Meghalaya on Easter.

"Lord Jesus died for our sins and he was raised on the third day to give a testimony that he has defeated death. Let us all imbibe his teachings & practice in real life the virtues which was given to us. May we love each other and propagate his message," Conrad said.

Opposition leader Dr Mukul Sangma also wished the people of the State on Easter.

"Happy Easter everyone. May the Resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ remind us God's love and grace for the whole mankind and the promise of the eternal life," Dr Sangma said.

Further Roy, Conrad and Dr Sangma condemned the terrorist attack in Sri-Lanka on Easter at churches and hotels that killed hundreds of innocent lives.

"Condolences for the bereaved families of the dead in Sri Lanka. Om Shanti," Roy tweeted.

Conrad, who also took to twitter to condemn the attack, said, "Condemn the attack on Churches and innocent lives which took place in Sri Lanka. May the Almighty give courage to the members of the bereaved families to be able to bear the loss and the strength to forgive those who have acted so mercilessly."

Dr Sangma also tweeted expressing his grief over the loss of innocent lives.

"Deeply grieved by the loss of so many precious lives and injuries to hundreds of people in Sri Lanka. I condemn the barbaric terror attacks on innocent and peace-loving people. My deepest condolences to the members of the bereaved families and prayers for the recovery of all injured," the Leader of Opposition tweeted.
