JORHAT: Locals of Letekojan Tea Estate spotted an injured elephant calf which was limping within the garden area for the past two days after being separated from a herd of wild elephants which had come out of Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary in search of food, said Pradip Gogoi, a Range Officer from Mariani forest range.

The Forest Range Officer said the mother and her injured calf were separated from the herd of 35-40 elephants three days ago. The calf has an injury in its right leg. Both mother and calf are starving so forest personnel from the Mariani Range of Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary and local people are providing food and water to both the elephants. The forest division is also on alert so that no one can go near the elephants. A medical team arrived on Saturday but could not go near the injured calf as the mother has become aggressive.
