Eminent Hindustani classical musician Annapurna Devi passes away

Annapurna Devi, a prominent classical Hindustani musician, died at Breach Candy hospital in Mumbai early Saturday. She was 91 years old.

According to a spokesperson of the Annapurna Devi Foundation, Mumbai she was suffering from old age related issues for the past few years.

She was pronounced dead at 3:51 AM. She was also a recipient of the Padma Bhushan award.

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee expressed grief on Annapurna Devi’s death. she tweeted, “Saddened at the passing away of Annapurna Devi, the founder of Maihar Gharana. My condolences to her family and admirers.”

Annapurna Devi was a disciple of her father Allauddin Khan whose invaluable contribution to Indian music encompassed in the Senia-Maihar gharana. She started training at the age of five and later graduated from the sitar to her instrument, the surbahar.

Born in Maihar, Madhya Pradesh in 1927, Annapurna Devi was the youngest of the four children.
